Jody Cranston simply refuses to rest on his laurels.
Two years ago he was recognized at the annual Richmond Sports Awards as the 2016 Master Athlete of the Year. That honour simply further fuelled his motivation. Recently, the distinguished local powerlifter tried his hand at another feat of strength: throwing stones. Literally.

“I love competing and challenging myself,” Cranston explains. “I think that all started when I set goals to meet my early powerlifting years back. It always feels great to set a goal and meet it.”

So he signed on to represent Richmond at the 22nd Amateur Athletic Union-sanctioned Feats of Strength contest at Alki Beach in Seattle. He came away having set a Canadian masters record in the 72-pound stone throw event. Competing in the 198-pound division, he threw the stone 11.75 feet.

“I took about a year to work on the technique,” says Cranston, adding trying to keep up with his 11-year-old daughter Taila and all her sports and activities helps too.

He also extends credit to his coach Gary Fee.

“Stone throwing and the track and field throws are gaining in popularity,” Cranston says. “It is great to be able to include outdoor training (an all-year initiative) to the indoor weight, power and gym training.”

Owner of Connection: Corporate Health, a fitness centre in Vancouver since 2011, Cranston began Powershape Personal Training in 1997. He is also a partner in Oranj Fitness with locations from B.C. to Ontario.

Cranston won gold in powerlifting at the BC Winter Games and set the provincial weight throw record for masters-aged (45 years and older) athletes. He’s also excelled at the bench press, with a best deadlift of 590 pounds.

The first-place finish in the stone throw qualifies Cranston for the AAU world championships in Las Vegas this fall.

His advice to others: “Whether it is stone throwing, powerlifting or any sport for that matter, find something you enjoy doing and put in the work. There is no down side to this.”
Taila Cranston struck out the side in order last weekend as the Richmond Panthers capped a 17-7 win over North Delta to remain undefeated.

The young pitching ace sat down all three batters she faced in the under-12 girls’ softball game, earning Richmond its second consecutive victory of the season.

Coached by Taila’s dad Jody, with assistance from Gary Louis, the Panthers are enjoying their first time playing together. This follows two months of indoor and outdoor training.

Playing an aggressive style of base running, the Panthers are elated with their early success. And Cranston is impressed by how quickly they are learning.

“These girls learn fast and they love running the bases. Aggressive and fast is a really great combination." says Cranston.

Aleeza Berger started the game on the mound for the Panthers during their victory at North Delta. She formed a strong battery with catcher Kamiya Hayre.

The Panthers are looking forward to participating in a tournament April 27 to 29 at Steveston/London Park. The season runs until mid-July.

The 2018 Panthers consist of: Aleeza Berger, Ashley Barstow, Devyn Scott, Emilie Snowdon, Emma Jordan, Genevieve Louis, Hannah Nickerson, Jessica Lilge, Jorja Jordan, Kamiya Hayre, Nina Scott and Taila Cranston.
"My first lesson in mind over matter dealing with strength happened when I was about 9 years old and changed my life."

Part of a fitness test we had in Elementary School was chinning yourself (holding yourself in the top/contracted position of a chin up) for time.

At first I could only do about 10 to 15 seconds. We had about 3 weeks to practice before the fitness test so, my parents bought a chin up bar you could set up in a doorway for me to train on.

Here's the catch:

Chinning yourself for 54 seconds was the Fitness Test level of Excellence. If I could chin myself for 60 seconds(!) at the fitness test my parents would buy me the 12 inch Darth Vader action figure I really wanted!

Well, in 3 weeks at the final test I went from a 15 second chin (needs improvement) to an official 60 seconds (Excellence)! Improvement like that is definitely Mind over Matter.

I am now 45 years old and have been a competitive Powerlifter/Strength Athlete for over 20 years which has led to my career as a Personal Trainer and current Fitness Center Owner and Investor. That first "Mind over Matter" strength lesson had a lot to do with this.
Why Celebrity Post-Pregnancy Weight-Loss Stories Suck
Because there are no miracles, just hard work (and personal chefs).

ARTICLE WRITER: Danielle Cheesman.

ARTICLE PORTION:
Us Weekly applauded Beyonce for doing it in five months; People magazine praised Jennifer Hudson for doing it in just two. Finally, the ladies had lost that godforsaken baby weight—60 and 35 pounds, respectively—gained during their pregnancies (and rightfully so damnit - though tabloids would have you believe it a burden to keep the packed-on pounds for even a few weeks after).

Jody Cranston, owner of fitness center Connection: Corporate Health in Vancouver, kept it simple. "Stick to the basics that work: diet and nutrition, and cardio and resistance training four times a week."
He springs in between weight equipment pressing 300 pounds and incorporating sets of upper body exercises into his routine without the other members even blinking an eye. Rohan is incredibly fast for someone without any legs. This is due to a serious birth defect that left both of his legs impaired.

“My deformity left both of my legs backward with the kneecaps on the opposite side of my body,” states the 28-year-old athlete. When Murphy was just 4 years old, he had them amputated. He gets around the gym with the aid of a wheelchair, and the help of a spotter by traveling around on what’s left of his legs. He’s dedicated to working out approximately four to five times a week at Islip, L.I. gym. Murphy’s at the gym so often that the other gym members are no longer shocked to see a double amputee putting forth a personal best of benching 350 pounds. He takes his workouts seriously and is training to compete as a power lifter in the 2016 Paralympics that will be held in Rio. Keeping a close eye on the London 2012 Paralympics, Murphy works diligently toward his goal of obtaining a gold medal in power lifting come the 2016 Paralympics in Rio. Motivational speaking keeps him busy, and it was the primary reason he was unable to compete in this year’s London Games. He’s spending his days inspiring kids from grade schools and colleges all over the United States and teaching them what it takes to succeed in life.

Most of his childhood was spent as a spectator on the sidelines where he found a hunger for athletics. In eighth grade, a gym teacher totally changed his life forever by introducing Rohan to the sport of wrestling. The coach started Murphy off as a team manager, but he thought he would be better suited on the mat due to his amazing upper body strength. A guidance counselor recommended a local community college for Murphy. This thoughtful but offending advice was ignored, and Rohen chose to wrestle for Penn State. Penn State’s head wrestling coach reminisces about the day Rohen first came into his office. “I thought he was coming to help the team out,” Sunderland said. “When he stated his intentions were to wrestle, and he showed me what he could do, I was amazed.” Rohan gained admiration and respect from his teammates with his dedication and zealous workout regimen. He never accepted a modified training plan and instead chose to perform the same exercises as his training buddies. When the team had to run up a ski slope laden with twigs, rocks and other debris, Murphy utilized his hands and upper body strength to crawl up the mountain. He majored in Kinesiology and after college he felt a yearning for the competition that he found on the wrestling mat. He found comfort with the idea to compete in the 2016 Paralympics. “Most people have formed an opinion that I’m a gym rat because I’m always there lifting,” Murphy stated. “I think it’s something that is necessary, so I can succeed at power lifting, and I can’t wait for 2016.”

Written By: Paige Carson writes for A Forever Recovery to help promote healthy living. Important and well written articles such as this will always have a home on my Blog. Many thanks Liz, hopefully this is the first many.

Fitness is now being widely recognized as a method of treatment for those who are currently suffering from cancer. While fitness and exercise will not necessarily get rid of any cancer that is already present in the system, it is a great way to remain healthy and in shape while preventing various other forms of cancer and diseases. In fact, studies have shown that individuals who exercise for at least thirty minutes during the day are less likely to suffer from breast cancer, colon cancer, and even testicular mesothelioma. Individuals who are suffering from cancer will most likely undergo various types of treatment. Some of the most common treatment methods for cancer include radiation therapy, surgery, and even chemotherapy.

While these treatment methods can help reduce the cancer and possibly get rid of the cancer for good, some of the treatment methods can leave the patient feeling very tired and lightheaded throughout the day. Beginning a fitness routine on a daily basis can help the cancer patient to relieve some of these frustrating side effects of cancer treatments. There are several forms of exercise that can be performed by cancer patients. Before the patient begins their fitness routine, they should speak with their doctor about their condition to make sure that it is okay to exercise. Most doctors will encourage cancer patients to exercise.

When a cancer patient begins a fitness routine, they should start off with simple stretches. A simple stretch would include sitting on the floor and stretching out the legs and arms. Static stretching and passive stretching are both gentle versions of stretching that can be beneficial for cancer patients. Once the patient completes about five minutes of stretching, they should begin some aerobic exercises. Some of the best exercises for cancer patients include brisk walking, running on a treadmill, jogging, and riding a bike. The cancer patient can switch up their fitness routine and do different activities each day.

It is important to exercise but it is also important that the patient does not overdo it. A daily fitness routine of about thirty minutes will not only help the cancer patient to maintain fitness and get into shape, it will often help cancer patients on their road to recovering from cancer.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw__owa8sEeYycjMEikeWq6-E8VVVC4Y2sCdWCYciITLqd_gb9trxWRbUxEBKDB2N2MnohwYA4xMEZ-GF4_mcI3-j4N_R0jKRIYv_nMLn0yXbq7m7IP2di4ylBSTb2VOmLAF2Axo4PAQo/s200/images+girl+freedom.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5669900225248391634" />Liz Davies is a recent college graduate and aspiring writer especially interested in health and wellness. Thanks to the brilliance of my friends Sheila and Darrell. Add in a new refreshment bar, beautiful upscale changing rooms, plenty of membership options and child care. Oranj is the perfect fitness experience. I have every Personal Trainers dream: a booming Fitness Studio that I am part owner of. Only, Oranj is in Kelowna and I am here in Vancouver. Oh well, I will figure it out one of these days. The title of this entry is borrowed liberally from the 1962 number 1 smash hit Return to Sender by Elvis Presley. I use the title, with a slight change (and sense of humor), to refer to making the The 2010 Powerliftingwatch.com Annual Top 50 List. With everything that has happened since making the 2009 List one year ago, its great to be back."

At this time last year I was just starting to recover and slowly regain the range of motion for my left arm after my operation. Repair and rehab for a complete DISTAL BICEPS TENDON RUPTURE was the order of the day. Although the surgery was a total success and recovery was going well, lifting anything heavy at that point was well into the future. I owe a huge thank you to my friend Dan Leece for all his help and the guys on the powerlifting forums for their advice on beating my (by far) worst lifting injury. During this time I learned a tremendous amount about injury, training, psychology and kinetics.

Strangely, I miss this period and wouldn't trade a moment of it, both pre and post operation.

The Distal Biceps Tendon Rupture injury, operation and rehab was educational, strength building and a lot of fun. I trained my friend Vicki Greenwood 15 minutes after the acute tendon rupture and the only work day I missed was the Friday of the operation. The other major trauma this past year: losing my friend Robert O Smtith was a whole different matter. For the past Seven years Robert O Smith, Aden Carpenter and myself barnstormed around the Pacific Northwest: competing in meets, appearing on Television, and putting up some of the best power lifts of our lives! Robert O Smith absolutely revived my Powerlifting career. Aden and I have already lifted together in December and had a great meet, I Deadlifted 257.5 Kilos / 568 lbs. and Aden Bench Pressed 70 Kilos / 154 lbs. Both lifts were of coarse dedicated to Robert O but, it will never be the same without our Mentor.

Its great to be back lifting competitively. I can't wait to see what I can do in 2011 with my post operation scar on my left arm and Robert O Smith on my side.

POST SCRIPT:
Powerliftingwatch.com, the recognized leader in the Internet world of powerlifting comes out with a yearly Top 50 list for each lift and weight category. This has quickly become the powerlifting standard of excellence because The Top 50 includes every sanctioned contest over the past year regardless of federation.

Also worth noting, The Powerliftingwatch.com Top 50 has no age class verification, only what you weighed and what you lifted, pure statistics the way they should be. Therefore, if you have placed in the Top 50 you have ranked ahead hundreds, possibly thousands of other lifters!

( Jody Cranston / 2010 Powerlifting ).Powershape / Jody Cranstonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18224219456224036822noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4488648248042355782.post-53910908894320612252010-12-05T02:17:00.001-08:002010-12-07T21:15:08.483-08:00USAPL 6th ANNUAL HOLIDAY CLASSIC.3 for 3 IN THE DEADLIFT: 257.5 Kilos / 568 lbs. : Master Men 82.5 Kilo / 181 lbs.
